Kyeiwaa

Rose Akua Attaa Mensah, born on 25 May 1963, is one of the towering figures of Ghanaian cinema, a performer whose name became synonymous with Kumawood during the genre's formative years. Before she was Kyeiwaa, she was a singer, a member of the African Brothers band led by the legendary Nana Kwame Ampadu. Her musical career grounded her in the traditional Ghanaian performance world before she transitioned to acting through Akan Drama TV series, which brought her storytelling skills to a visual medium.

Her defining moment came with the lead role in the Kyeiwaa film series, a multi-part production that became one of the most watched Akan-language films in Ghana's history. The series ran across twelve parts, an extraordinary commitment for any production, and cemented her place in Ghana's golden age of cinema. It also gave her the name by which she would be known for the rest of her career: audiences stopped calling her Rose Mensah and simply called her Kyeiwaa.

Over her career she has appeared in more than 150 films, an output that reflects both the prolific nature of Kumawood production and her own tireless work ethic. She is a multiple award winner, with recognition spanning decades of film. Her roles have often centred on powerful female archetypes: the determined woman, the cunning elder, the figure whose authority shifts the trajectory of the story.

In 2015 she relocated to the United States, stepping back from acting for a period. In 2020, now based in Worcester, she married Michael Kissi Asare in a white wedding ceremony, a personal milestone that was celebrated by fans in Ghana and the diaspora.

Kyeiwaa's name remains one of the most recognised in Ghanaian entertainment, cited in the same breath as the foundational figures who gave Akan-language cinema its identity.
