Teresa A. Cooke

Teresa A. Cooke serves as Board Chair of OmniBSIC Bank Ghana, the commercial bank formed through the 2019 merger of OmniBank Ghana and BSIC Ghana as part of the Bank of Ghana's banking sector recapitalisation and consolidation programme. As chair of the OmniBSIC board, she occupies the highest governance position at a bank that is in the relatively early stages of its institutional life as a merged entity, working to integrate the systems, cultures, and market positions of two previously separate institutions into a unified and competitive bank.

The chairship of a bank formed through a merger carries distinctive governance responsibilities. Beyond the standard challenges of commercial bank governance, including strategy oversight, risk management, and management accountability, the chair of a merged institution must also provide leadership on the integration agenda, helping ensure that the promised benefits of consolidation, including scale efficiencies, combined capabilities, and a stronger capital base, are actually realised through effective integration management.

OmniBSIC's formation was part of a broader pattern of banking consolidation in Ghana, driven by the Bank of Ghana's mandate for higher minimum capital requirements following the sector cleanup of 2017 and 2018. Banks that merged to meet those requirements had to demonstrate that their consolidation created genuinely stronger institutions, not just larger ones, and the governance quality of boards like OmniBSIC's has been central to whether that demonstration is credible.

Cooke's recognition in the 2026 Avance Media Top 100 Women Board Directors ranking, which found that women board chairs increased from 10 in 2023 to 19 in 2026, places her within a growing group of women occupying the most senior governance positions in Ghana's corporate sector. Her chairship of OmniBSIC represents one of the more demanding governance roles in Ghana's banking sector, leading the board of an institution whose institutional identity and competitive position are still being established.
