Kwame A-Plus

Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus or Kwame A-Plus, is a Ghanaian hiplife musician, political activist and politician. In December 2024 he was elected Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central in the Central Region as an independent candidate, ending the NPP's eight-year hold on the seat.

Early life and education

He was born on 6 March 1977 in Saltpond, the second of six children of Daniel Kwasi Obeng, a school proprietor, and Elizabeth Obeng, a trader. He grew up in Gomoa Asebu, where he started school at his father's Gomoaman Preparatory School. He later earned a BSc in public administration and a master's in international relations and diplomacy from GIMPA, and an LLB.

Music

A Plus came to prominence as a hiplife artist whose songs took on politicians. His 2000 album Freedom of Speech, released during that year's general election, included "Mesuro Mpo Na Merekeka Yi O" ("I am afraid of what I am saying, but I will say it anyway"). He kept writing songs about corruption and injustice, and became one of the country's best-known political commentators.

Parliament

In the 2024 election he won Gomoa Central with 14,277 votes, defeating the sitting NPP MP, Naana Eyiah Quansah (11,637), and the NDC candidate (10,112). After his win he said that both main parties had approached him and that he leaned towards working with the NDC caucus.
