Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh

Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh is a lawyer and local government specialist who represented Sunyani East in the Bono Region for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) across four parliaments, from 2009 to 2025. A former Majority Chief Whip, he was nominated in February 2024 as one of the MPs who could preside over the House.

Local government man

Born on 6 November 1966 and hailing from Jinijini, Ameyaw-Cheremeh qualified at the Ghana School of Law in 1995. His early career was in local government: he was general secretary of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), and he later earned an MPhil in public administration from the University of Ghana.

Whip and committee chair

He won Sunyani East in 2008 and held it for four terms. He rose to Majority Chief Whip, responsible for keeping NPP members in line on key votes, and later chaired the Judiciary Committee. Outside Parliament he has chaired the board of the Bui Power Authority.

A heavy defeat

The 2024 election brought a sharp reversal. Seid Mubarak of the NDC won Sunyani East with more than 34,000 votes to Ameyaw-Cheremeh's 22,000. He is married with four children.
