About Faustina Elikplim Akurugu

Faustina Elikplim Akurugu is a Ghanaian politician born on 8 April 1975 in Adina in the Volta Region, who serves as the Member of Parliament for the Dome-Kwabenya constituency in the Greater Accra Region. A member of the National Democratic Congress whose victory in December 2024 by a margin of fewer than three hundred votes broke the NPP's long-standing dominance in one of Accra's prominent northern suburban constituencies, she is the first NDC representative for Dome-Kwabenya in the modern political era and has moved quickly to translate her historic electoral success into visible constituency development work.

Background and political journey

Akurugu hails from Adina in the Volta Region but has built her political base in Dome-Kwabenya, a Greater Accra constituency that spans communities from Dome through Kwabenya and into the northern Accra suburban spread. She contested the constituency in the December 2020 general election on the NDC ticket, coming close to winning but falling short with 44 per cent of the votes as incumbent NPP MP Sarah Adwoa Sarfo retained the seat. Undeterred by the narrow loss, she returned to contest the NDC primaries in May 2023, winning the party's candidacy with 1,564 delegate votes, and prepared for a rematch in 2024.

2024 election victory

The December 2024 general election delivered an outcome that transformed Dome-Kwabenya's parliamentary representation. Akurugu defeated the NPP candidate Mike Oquaye Junior with 50,967 votes against his 50,669, a margin of just 298 votes from over 100,000 cast. The result, which came against an NPP candidate who carried the name recognition of his prominent political family, was widely regarded as one of the most significant individual constituency upsets of the election cycle. She assumed office on 7 January 2025.

Parliamentary work

Since entering Parliament, Akurugu has been active on constituency infrastructure development. In March 2026, she cut the sod for the construction of two roads within the Ga East Municipal District, a concrete investment in the infrastructure deficit that had been a recurring community complaint, and an early signal of her commitment to delivering visible outcomes in the constituency that elected her so narrowly.

Political Legacy

Faustina Elikplim Akurugu's narrow victory in a constituency she had previously come close to winning, followed by immediate infrastructure delivery commitments, reflects a parliamentary career built on sustained persistence and a clear community development mandate. Her historic win ended NDC exclusion from Dome-Kwabenya and is among the most closely fought individual results in recent Ghanaian electoral history.
