Francis Asenso-Boakye

Francis Asenso-Boakye is a Ghanaian politician, businessman and former minister born on 24 September 1977 in Maase in the Ashanti Region, who serves as the Member of Parliament for the Bantama constituency. A member of the New Patriotic Party who has represented what is arguably Ghana's most NPP-loyal parliamentary seat since 2021, he served as Minister for Roads and Highways from 2022 to 2025 and is one of the party's most prominent young figures engaged in building the NPP's identity following its 2024 national defeat.

Education and formation

Asenso-Boakye was born in Maase and hails from Nkwatia in the Kwahu East District of the Eastern Region, giving him both Ashanti Region political roots through Bantama and Eastern Region heritage. He studied at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and extended his academic formation to Michigan State University in the United States, building an international educational perspective that has informed his approach to infrastructure governance and national development policy. His earliest political work was in student politics: he was a student activist of the NPP who played an instrumental role in founding the party's Tertiary Students Confederacy, TESCON, and served as its Founding President, establishing his party leadership credentials at university age.

Political career

His career in government began as Deputy Chief of Staff and Political Assistant to President Nana Akufo-Addo, a role at the heart of the executive presidency that gave him direct experience of national governance and policy coordination. He was first elected Member of Parliament for Bantama in January 2021 and was appointed Minister for Roads and Highways in 2022, overseeing the ministry responsible for Ghana's road infrastructure, construction procurement and maintenance systems. He retained his Bantama seat in December 2024 with 47,275 votes representing 85.49 per cent, in an election where Bantama was the only constituency in Ghana where the NPP won at every single polling station, a result that underlines the exceptional depth of NPP dominance in the Bantama area.

Post-2024 NPP rebuilding

Following the NPP's heavy national defeat in 2024, Asenso-Boakye has been an active voice on party rebuilding, urging NPP aspirants and figures to direct their criticism toward the NDC rather than turning on each other, and positioning himself as a party unity figure during the painful process of opposition rebuilding that followed the loss of government.

Political Legacy

Francis Asenso-Boakye's career combines student activist roots, executive proximity to the presidency, ministerial infrastructure leadership and the political stewardship of Ghana's most electorally secure NPP constituency. His Bantama mandate, held with overwhelming majorities, gives him a secure platform for his longer-term political ambitions within the NPP.
