Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu

In July 2023 Francis-Xavier Sosu, the NDC MP for Madina, steered through Parliament the bill that abolished the death penalty for most crimes in Ghana. A human rights lawyer before he was a politician, he had spent years taking on public-interest cases.

Early life and education

He was born on 12 February 1979 in Accra New Town and comes from Denu in the Volta Region. After St. John's Grammar School he studied at the University of Ghana, earning a BA in sociology, an LLB, an LLM in oil and gas law and an MA in economic policy management, and later an MPhil in conflict, human rights and peace studies at the University of Education, Winneba. He was called to the Bar in October 2010 and has since completed a PhD in law at the University of Ghana.

Law practice

He worked at Logan and Associates before founding F-X Law and Associates in Accra in 2012, where he is managing partner, focusing on human rights and public-interest litigation. In August 2025 the Supreme Court appointed him a notary public.

Politics

He narrowly lost the NDC's Madina primary in November 2015, won it in 2020 and then took the seat from the NPP's Abu-Bakar Saddique Boniface with 62,127 votes. He was sworn in on 7 January 2021 and was re-elected in 2024. In Parliament he serves on the committee that handles constitutional and legal affairs and on the Appointments Committee, which vets ministers. Before the 2024 election he released a gospel single, "Grace for Race", under the name Son of Grace.

Family

He and his wife, Felicia, have four children.
