Fifi Fiavi Kwetey

Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey is a Ghanaian politician and the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He was the Member of Parliament for Ketu South in the Volta Region for two terms, from 2013 to 2021, and held several ministerial posts under Presidents John Atta Mills and John Mahama.

Early life and education

He was born on 2 June 1967 in Hohoe and comes from Nogokpo, both in the Volta Region. He took his O Levels at Bishop Herman College in Kpando and his A Levels at Achimota School, then earned a BA in economics and psychology from the University of Ghana, where he chaired the NDC's campus branch. In 1994 he obtained a diploma from the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Finance career

After national service with the Office of Parliament, he worked as a financial analyst and stockbroker at Strategic African Securities from 1995, then as a fund manager, investment analyst and stockbroker at CDH Financial Holdings from 1998 to 2002. He also taught finance courses at the Ghana Stock Exchange.

Party and government

In December 2005 he was elected the NDC's propaganda secretary, the party's chief communicator. In 2009 President Mills made him Deputy Minister of Finance, a post he held until January 2013. Under President Mahama he became Minister of State at the Presidency in charge of financial and allied institutions in February 2013, then Minister for Food and Agriculture, and later Minister for Transport.

Parliament

He won the Ketu South NDC primary in 2012 and then the seat with 77,837 votes, almost 89 per cent. In 2016 he was re-elected with 65.5 per cent against the independent Jim Yao Morti. He was later elected General Secretary of the NDC.

Controversy

US diplomatic cables leaked in 2010 recorded him telling embassy officials in 2007 that a Muslim could not be elected president of Ghana. The remarks angered many Ghanaian Muslims, who called on him to apologise.

Personal life

He is married to Naomi Kwetey, and they have four children.
