Nicholas Amankwah

Nicholas Amankwah is a Ghanaian politician born on 20 May 1984 who serves as the Member of Parliament for the Amenfi East constituency in the Western Region. A member of the National Democratic Congress who has represented the constituency since January 2021, he brings to Parliament an earlier career in local government administration as a District Chief Executive for the Wassa Amenfi East District and is one of the NDC's established Western Region MPs from a constituency at the heart of Ghana's gold-producing forest belt.

Local government career

Amankwah served as the District Chief Executive for the Wassa Amenfi East District Assembly from 2016 to 2017, a government appointment that gave him executive-level responsibility for the administration of a Western Region district that straddles gold mining, cocoa farming and the forest economy of the Amenfi area. His tenure as DCE gave him first-hand experience of constituency-level development planning, infrastructure provision and the administration of local government services in a district whose communities depend on artisanal and small-scale gold mining alongside the cocoa farming economy of the Wassa-Amenfi belt.

Parliamentary career

He won the NDC's parliamentary primary for Amenfi East unopposed in August 2019 and won the general election seat in December 2020 with 36,215 votes representing 53.90 per cent of valid ballots. He retained the seat in December 2024, continuing the NDC's hold on Amenfi East into the Ninth Parliament. He serves on the Employment, Social Welfare and State Enterprises Committee, a committee whose oversight mandate over labour markets, social protection and state enterprise governance connects to the employment challenges of a Western Region constituency where mining and agricultural employment are the dominant livelihood sources.

Political Legacy

Nicholas Amankwah's progression from District Chief Executive to multi-term MP for Amenfi East reflects a political career built from local government experience to parliamentary representation of a constituency in one of the Western Region's economically significant mining and cocoa corridors.
