Akwasi Opong-Fosu is a local government specialist who was Minister for Local Government and Rural Development under President Mahama and represented Amenfi East in the Western Region for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from 2013 to 2017. He was born on 1 February 1958 and comes from Afransie.
Opong-Fosu took a master's in public policy and management at the University of London in 2002 and worked in the local government service. President Mahama appointed him Minister for Local Government and Rural Development in March 2013; Julius Debrah succeeded him in May 2014. He lost Amenfi East in 2016 to the NPP's Patrick Bogyako-Saime. He is married with three children. Nicholas Amankwah of the NDC holds the seat today.
