About Abronye DC

Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, is a Ghanaian politician and the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He is one of the party's loudest communicators on radio and television, and his remarks about opponents, the police and the courts have made him a regular subject of the news and, since 2025, of two criminal cases. He was born in March 1979 and comes from the Bono Region.

Party career

Abronye rose through the NPP in the old Brong Ahafo Region, where he served as first vice regional chairman. When Brong Ahafo was split into three regions in 2019, he became chairman of the party in the new Bono Region, with Sunyani as its capital. He has held the post since, and on 15 August 2026 the regional delegates kept him in office with 201 votes, well ahead of four challengers.

His style is confrontational. He has clashed publicly with figures in his own party as well as with the National Democratic Congress, and he regularly appears on political talk shows to defend the NPP and attack the government of John Mahama.

Education

In a December 2021 interview on Adom FM, Abronye said he held a Bachelor of Laws, a postgraduate qualification in international relations and diplomacy, a master's in energy economics, a degree in marketing and a professional certificate in criminal investigation and intelligence gathering, and that he was studying for another master's at Coventry University in the UK. Profiles of him give the law degree as an LLB from GIMPA and the investigation diploma as one from the Doyen Institute.

The 2025 case over the IGP

On 8 September 2025, days after he said he had applied for political asylum in eight countries over what he called political persecution, Abronye was arrested when he answered a CID invitation. He was charged with offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace and publication of false news. Prosecutors say that on Ohia TV's programme The Evidence on 3 September 2025 he claimed that the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, attended NDC strategy meetings in Akwatia during the by-election held there on 2 September, and that he insulted the IGP's intelligence. A Circuit Court in Accra remanded him on 10 September. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of GH₵50,000.

The 2026 case over a judge

The CID arrested him again on 13 April 2026 over remarks directed at a Circuit Court judge, which prosecutors say were abusive and likely to disturb public peace. On 13 May 2026 he was arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court on charges of offensive conduct and publication of false news, pleaded not guilty and was remanded into the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin called the detention a constitutional wrong.

The High Court later granted him bail of GH₵100,000 with two sureties, on condition that he surrender his passport and report to the CID every two weeks. He was briefly remanded again on 4 June 2026 for not depositing his passport; he handed it in the next day and his bail was restored on 8 June. Both cases were still before the courts at the last reports, and he is presumed innocent unless a court finds otherwise.
