About Abubakari Sumani
Abukari Sumani was a lawyer and diplomat who represented Tamale in Parliament for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for three terms, first as MP for Tishigu/Choggu from 2001 and then as MP for Tamale North from 2005 to 2013. He was born at Savelugu on 28 April 1946 and belonged to the Dagbon royal family.
Sumani studied law at the University of Ghana and was called to the bar in 1972. He served as Ghana's ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and the Gulf states and chaired the board of the Public Procurement Authority. He lost Tamale North in 2012 to the independent candidate Alhassan Dahamani. He died at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on 12 August 2017. He was married with ten children. Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini of the NDC holds Tamale North today.
