Charles Forson

Charles Forson is a Ghanaian marketing professional and politician born on 12 April 1974 in Taido, who serves as the Member of Parliament for the Tema Central constituency in the Greater Accra Region. A member of the New Patriotic Party who won the seat in the December 2024 general election by a margin of just 55 votes, he represents one of the most tightly contested constituencies in Ghana and assumed office as the NPP's minority MP for one of Tema's most commercially active and densely populated areas.

Education and professional background

Forson's formal academic qualifications include a Certificate in Marketing from the Institute of Professional Studies, obtained in August 2007, a practical qualification in marketing theory and practice that has informed his professional engagement with commercial and business development work. His professional career has been anchored in the Tema area, where Ghana's principal industrial port city and its surrounding communities have created a diverse and competitive economy of trading, logistics, port-related services and manufacturing.

2024 election

He contested the December 2024 general election in Tema Central and was declared the winner after the Electoral Commission added the results of two polling stations that had initially been excluded from the count. His final tally was 18,870 votes against the NDC candidate Madam Ebi Bright who received 18,815 votes, a margin of just 55 votes that made Tema Central one of the most closely watched constituency results of the entire election night. The declaration was made by the Electoral Commission on 5 January 2025 and he assumed office on 7 January 2025. The result was a remarkable individual success for the NPP in an election year that saw the party suffer a significant national defeat.

Parliamentary career

He serves as Chairperson of the Backbenchers' Business Committee, a parliamentary body that supports non-ministerial MPs in raising constituency and national issues in the House, and is also a member of the Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions Committee. Both assignments reflect the practical labour and employment concerns relevant to Tema Central, a constituency where port and industrial employment, labour rights and job creation are among the defining economic concerns of residents.

Political Legacy

Charles Forson's election by a margin of 55 votes in Tema Central is among the more dramatic individual results in recent Ghanaian parliamentary history. His narrow victory in a constituency the NPP might easily have lost shows the micro-level effectiveness of his campaign in a major urban seat.
