Cynthia Mamle Morrison

Cynthia Mamle Morrison is a Montessori educator from Elmina who served as Ghana's Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection and represented Agona West in the Central Region from 2017 to 2025.

School proprietress

Born on 17 January 1964, Morrison trained in Montessori education at the Maria Montessori Training School and Hepziba Montessori and also studied catering. She founded Maryland Montessori school in Dansoman and ran her own business before entering politics. On her 52nd birthday she donated wheelchairs, crutches and walking canes for the blind, an early sign of the social welfare focus she later took into government.

Gender minister

She won Agona West for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2016. On 9 August 2018 President Akufo-Addo appointed her Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, putting her in charge of programmes such as LEAP cash transfers and school feeding.

Going independent

In April 2024 she lost the NPP primary to Chris Arthur and decided to run as an independent, despite a court injunction and pressure from party leaders. During the campaign a gunshot was fired into a crowd of her supporters returning from an event near Agona Swedru, injuring one person. The NDC's Ernestina Ofori Dangbey won the seat in December 2024. Morrison is married to Herbert Morrison and has seven children.
