Kwaku Agyeman Kwarteng

Kwaku Kwarteng was the Kufuor government's finance spokesman from 2006 to 2009, and when the NPP returned to power in 2017 he became a deputy finance minister under Ken Ofori-Atta. He has held the Obuasi West seat since it was created in 2012.

Engineer and economist

He was born at Kokofu in the Ashanti Region on 12 February 1969. He studied civil engineering at KNUST, graduating in 1996, and returned for an MSc in the same subject in 2013. In between he took an MA in economic policy management at the University of Ghana in 2009.

Politics

After the NPP lost power he worked as a policy adviser to the party from 2010 to 2013. He won the new Obuasi West constituency in 2012 with 64 per cent of the vote and has kept it since, beating the NDC's John Alexander Ackon by more than 20,000 votes in 2016. President Akufo-Addo nominated him and Charles Adu Boahen as deputy finance ministers in January 2017. At his vetting he claimed the outgoing government had left about GH₵7 billion in arrears, a figure the Minority disputed. In Parliament he has served on the communications and poverty reduction committees.
