Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong

Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong is a Ghanaian lawyer who was Attorney General and Minister for Justice from February 2013 to January 2017, the second woman to hold the office after Betty Mould-Iddrisu. In January 2025 she was appointed legal counsel to President John Dramani Mahama, and she sits on the board of the Ghana Gold Board as a presidential nominee.

Early life and education

She was born in Tema and attended Tema Parents Association School, then took her O and A levels at St. Rose's Senior High School in Akwatia. She earned a law degree at the University of Ghana and qualified at the Ghana School of Law in 1994. She also holds a graduate diploma in law and development from the International Institute of Social Studies in The Hague.

Legal career

She began at the law firm Fugar and Co. and in 2000 became a shareholder and director of Lithur Brew and Company, working mainly in commercial law, transactions and corporate advice. In 2009 President John Evans Atta Mills appointed her to the board of the Volta River Authority. She also served on the Ghana at 50 Commission of Enquiry.

Attorney General

President Mahama appointed her the 23rd Attorney General and Minister for Justice in February 2013. During her tenure she represented Ghana before international tribunals, including the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and was part of the team that handled Ghana's maritime boundary dispute with Côte d'Ivoire at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. She left office on 6 January 2017.

Later roles

The International Chamber of Commerce appointed her to its Court of Arbitration for a three-year term from 1 July 2018. On 6 January 2025 she was named legal counsel to the incoming President Mahama. She is an honorary council member of the Ghana Association of Restructuring and Insolvency Advisors.

Personal life

She has three children.
