Medikal is one of the sharpest and most talked-about rappers of Ghana's current era, an artist whose quick, boastful style and headline-friendly private life have kept him at the centre of the country's hip-hop conversation for a decade.

Early life

He was born Samuel Adu Frimpong on 4 April 1993 in Sowutuom, a suburb of Accra. Before music, he pursued football, playing for the Ghana Premier League side Sekondi Hasaacas, an early career he swapped for the studio. His stage name came from an early fascination with rapping about doctors and hospitals.

Career

He was signed by Criss Waddle to the AMG (Arab Money Gang) label around 2010, and broke through in 2017 when he earned some of the highest nominations at that year's Ghana Music Awards. Hits like Confirm, Too Risky and his Letter to My Ex, Scarface and Omo Ada records established him as one of the most commercially reliable rappers in the country.
