About Peter Amewu

John Peter Amewu was born on 16 March 1968 in Wli-Todzi in the Hohoe Municipality of Ghana's Volta Region. He attended St. Mary's Seminary Secondary School in Lolobi and Adisadel College for his secondary education before studying Cost Engineering at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. He later earned an MBA in Finance from the University of Ghana, Legon, followed by postgraduate degrees in International Energy Industry Management and Petroleum Law and Policy from the University of Dundee in the United Kingdom. Amewu built his early career at the intersection of energy policy and governance. He co-founded the Africa Centre for Energy Policy, one of Ghana's foremost energy sector think tanks, where he served as Director of Policy and Research and advised government bodies and private sector actors across the continent. His command of oil, gas, and extractive industries positioned him as a credible technical voice in national energy debates before he entered elected office. His political career began as the NPP's municipal chief executive for the Hohoe Municipal Assembly, serving from 2005 to 2009. He contested the Hohoe parliamentary seat in 2004 and 2008 and lost both times in what had long been a safe NDC constituency. When President Akufo-Addo appointed him Minister for Lands and Natural Resources in February 2017, Amewu oversaw forest policy and Ghana's complex land tenure and mineral licensing framework. In August 2018 his portfolio shifted to Energy Minister, and he championed upstream sector growth and drove the government's vision to establish a petroleum hub in the Western Region. The 2020 general elections delivered a historic milestone: Amewu became the first NPP candidate to win the Hohoe parliamentary seat since the return of multiparty democracy in 1992, ending decades of NDC dominance. He was subsequently appointed Minister for Railways Development. He contested the 2024 elections but lost the seat. His career combines the technical rigour of a trained energy economist with the political tenacity required to break an entrenched partisan pattern in one of Ghana's most contested constituencies.
