About Sammi Awuku

Samuel Awuku, known widely as Sammi Awuku, is a Ghanaian lawyer, party organiser and politician born on 10 April 1984 in Koforidua in the Eastern Region, who serves as the Member of Parliament for the Akuapem North constituency. A member of the New Patriotic Party who served as the NPP's national organiser before winning the Akuapem North seat in December 2024, and who also served as Director General of the National Lottery Authority from 2021, he is one of the younger members of the NPP's parliamentary minority with a career that spans party organisation, state enterprise leadership and now constituency representation.

Education

Awuku holds a Diploma in Law from the University of London, the international distance learning programme through which the University of London delivers legal education globally. He holds a Master of Science degree in International Relations from the Freie Universitat Berlin, Germany, and has completed an Executive Education Certificate in Public Leadership from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a prestigious executive education programme for emerging public leaders from around the world. His combination of a London Law diploma, an international relations master's from one of Europe's leading research universities, and a Harvard executive certificate gives him a multi-institutional, internationally oriented academic formation.

Career in party organisation and state enterprise

Awuku served in multiple roles within the NPP's organisational structure, including as Deputy Communications Director, National Youth Organiser and National Organiser of the party, positions in which he built national visibility and organisational influence within one of Ghana's two major political parties. In 2021, President Akufo-Addo appointed him Director General of the National Lottery Authority, Ghana's state gaming regulator and lottery operator, a role he held until resigning in January 2025 to focus on his parliamentary seat following his December 2024 victory. He won Akuapem North with 28,365 votes, defeating the NDC's John Evans Kumordzi who received 14,217 votes.

Political Legacy

Sammi Awuku's trajectory from NPP Youth Organiser through National Organiser to NLA Director General to Member of Parliament maps a deliberate political career built on party organisation, state management and now legislative representation, with an international academic formation that positions him as one of the NPP's more globally credentialled younger parliamentarians.
