Member of Parliament
About Samuel Atta-Mills
Samuel Atta Mills is a Ghanaian economist, finance professional and politician born on 26 April 1956 in Kissi in the Central Region, who serves as the Member of Parliament for the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem constituency. A member of the National Democratic Congress who has represented the KEEA constituency since January 2017 and retained his seat in December 2024, he is the younger brother of Ghana's late President John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills, bringing to Parliament a professional formation built across tourism administration and private sector finance management in the United States.
Education
Samuel Atta Mills attended Mfantsipim School, the prestigious Cape Coast boys' secondary school that has produced many of Ghana's most prominent public figures, for his secondary education, obtaining his GCE Certificate. He proceeded to Komenda College where he obtained a Diploma in Education. He then pursued higher education in the United States at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Economics and Accounting in 1984 and a Master of Business Administration in Finance and Banking in 1986. His American business school education gave him a rigorous quantitative grounding in economics, accounting and financial management at a time when such postgraduate finance credentials were relatively rare among Ghanaian professionals.
Career and parliamentary service
After his education, he built a career in both Ghana and the United States. He served as Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Development Company from 2003 to 2005 and later worked as a Regional Manager for Panera Bread in the United States. He was elected Member of Parliament for the KEEA constituency in December 2016 and has retained the seat since, most recently winning in December 2024 with 30,220 votes against the NPP's Dennis Percyval Quaicoe who received 17,675 votes. The KEEA constituency covers the Central Region's coastal towns including Komenda, Moree and Elmina, communities whose history of the Atlantic trade, fishing economy and heritage tourism are central to the constituency's cultural and economic identity.
Political Legacy
Samuel Atta Mills's Mfantsipim and Belmont University education, his tourism and finance executive career and his parliamentary representation of the KEEA constituency give his political career a professional depth that complements his family connection to one of Ghana's most significant political legacies.
