Tagoe Sisters

Twins Lydia and Elizabeth Tagoe have been singing gospel together since 1983. Their first album, Nyame Ye Kese, came out in 1987, and in March 2021 the 3Music Women's Brunch honoured them for their long career.

Early years

Lydia Dedei and Elizabeth Korkoi Tagoe were born on 27 July 1965 to the late Hammond Ayikwei Tagoe of Korle-Wokon in Accra and Theresa Aidoo of Dunkwa-on-Offin. They went to Alogboshie primary and middle school near Achimota and trained in dressmaking at the YMCA before choosing music. With Hannah Tsia Mensah they first sang as the I Am Three Sisters, backing Felix Bell and G Man and appearing on Picus Laryea's shows.

Gospel career

In 1983 they joined Open Bible Church International, where they began backing the male group Advent Heralds, who wrote their debut album. From 1985 Rev. Francis Akwasi Amoako guided their career, taking them on tours at home and abroad. Orekyekye and Stay in My Heart followed in 1988. Amoako died in a road accident in 1990 as they returned from a crusade in Takoradi, and Rev. Dr Thomas Harry Yawson became their songwriter and director.

Family and charity

Lydia married Rev. Yawson and they have three children; Elizabeth has two children with her late husband. Lydia works as a caterer and Elizabeth as an events planner. Their Tagoe Twin Foundation helps mothers who beg with their twins, and the Tagoe Sisters Association links mothers of twins so they can support one another.
