Hanna Tetteh

Hanna Serwaa Tetteh is a lawyer and diplomat who served as Ghana's Minister for Trade and Industry from 2009 to 2013 and Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2013 to 2017. She represented Awutu Senya for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and since 2025 has led the United Nations Support Mission in Libya as the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative. She was born on 31 May 1967.

Early life

Tetteh was born in Szeged, Hungary, to a Ghanaian father and a Hungarian mother. She attended Wesley Girls' High School in Cape Coast, studied law at the University of Ghana and was called to the Bar in 1992.

Law and business

After national service with FIDA, the women lawyers' federation, she practised at Ansa-Asare and Co and worked briefly at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice. She then joined Ghana Agro Food Company (GAFCO) in Tema, rising from legal adviser to deputy general manager and later general manager.

Minister and UN envoy

She first entered Parliament in 2000 and served one term before returning to GAFCO. Under President Mills she became Minister for Trade and Industry, and under President Mahama Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ghana's top diplomat. After leaving government she took senior United Nations posts, and in 2025 was appointed to head the UN mission in Libya. Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui of the NDC holds Awutu Senya West today.
