Henry Quartey

Henry Quartey is a Ghanaian politician of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He was Member of Parliament for Ayawaso Central from January 2013 to January 2025, Greater Accra Regional Minister from 2021, when he ran the "Let's Make Accra Work" campaign, and Minister of the Interior in 2024.

Early life and education

He was born on 12 March 1971 in Otublohum, Accra. He attended Hams Secondary School in Dansoman, Zams Secondary and Technical School in Bolgatanga and Osu Presbyterian Senior High School, where he took his O levels. He later earned a postgraduate certificate in public administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

Business career

He worked in sales and marketing at BBC Trading from 1992 to 1996 and was sales manager and a director at Pecoll Aluminium Systems from 1995 to 2000. He was also regional director of Dalebrook Company in 1997 and 1998, and since 2003 he has been chief executive of Krafty Hospitality Services in Accra.

Parliament

He first won Ayawaso Central in the 2012 election and entered the Sixth Parliament in January 2013. In 2016 he held the seat with 33,002 votes against 28,363 for the NDC's Abdul Rauf Tubazu, and he was re-elected in 2020. In Parliament he sat on the Roads and Transport Committee and the Appointments Committee.

Minister

President Nana Akufo-Addo made him Deputy Minister of the Interior in 2017 and later Deputy Minister for National Security. In 2021 he became Greater Accra Regional Minister. His "Let's Make Accra Work" campaign cleared traders and unauthorised structures from pavements and roadsides, and moved onion sellers and scrap dealers from Agbogbloshie to Adjen Kotoku. On 14 February 2024 Parliament approved him as Minister of the Interior, replacing Ambrose Dery.

2024 election and after

In the December 2024 election he lost Ayawaso Central to Abdul Rauf Tubazu, who polled 29,755 votes to his 23,345. He has stayed active in NPP politics, and in April 2026 Boakye Agyarko named him campaign manager for his bid to become NPP National Chairman.

Personal life

He is a Christian, married to Sybil Ansah Quartey, and they have six children. In 2021 he pledged a monthly stipend of GH¢1,500 to the ailing actor Psalm Adjeteyfio.
