Abdul Rauf Tongym Tubazu

Abdul Rauf Tongym Tubazu is a Ghanaian politician born on 28 September 1983 who serves as the Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso Central constituency in the Greater Accra Region. Elected in December 2024 on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress, he achieved one of the more striking constituency results of that election cycle when he defeated the incumbent Henry Quartey, a well-known minister in the outgoing NPP government, by a margin of more than six thousand votes.

Background

Tubazu hails from Bawku in the Upper East Region, a background that places him within the community of northern Ghanaians who have built their careers and political lives in Accra. Ayawaso Central is a predominantly urban constituency located in the heart of Greater Accra, encompassing densely populated communities that present a member of parliament with the full spectrum of urban governance challenges: housing, informal economy regulation, traffic and infrastructure pressure, and the complex relationship between long-established residents and more recent settlers.

NDC candidacy and 2024 election

He won the NDC's parliamentary primaries for Ayawaso Central ahead of the 2024 general election, defeating Sophia Karen Ackuaku to become the party's candidate. In the December 2024 election, his performance significantly outpaced national averages: he secured 29,755 votes against Quartey's 23,345, a majority of more than 6,400 votes in a constituency the NPP had held. Henry Quartey had been one of the NPP's most publicly active Greater Accra Regional Ministers before transitioning to a parliamentary campaign, making his defeat at the hands of Tubazu one of the more notable results of the election night. Tubazu assumed office on 7 January 2025 as a first-term member of Ghana's Ninth Parliament.

Abdul Rauf Tongym Tubazu's entry into Parliament on the back of a decisive victory over a prominent incumbent in a major Accra constituency established him as one of the more consequential new NDC figures in Ghana's Ninth Parliament.
