MacCarthy Mac-Gbathy

MacCarthy Mac-Gbathy is a Ghanaian social entrepreneur and the co-founder and executive director of HOPin Academy, an ecosystem development organisation based in Tamale in the Northern Region.

HOPin Academy

Mac-Gbathy founded HOPin Academy in 2010 with Anders Midtgaard. Its mission is to create opportunities for young people and women in northern Ghana so that they do not have to migrate to the south to find work. The academy does this through entrepreneurship training, startup development and building human capital, and its work has been described as a practical answer to rural-urban migration. Since it began, Mac-Gbathy has worked with more than 1,500 entrepreneurs across northern Ghana.

Education

He studied at Tamale Technical University, earning a Higher National Diploma in marketing and communication, and later obtained a degree in entrepreneurship and innovation.

Recognition

Social Enterprise Ghana has celebrated him as a social entrepreneur of note, and he speaks at events such as the Tech in Ghana conference on building entrepreneurship ecosystems outside the capital.
