Edem

Edem broke new ground in Ghanaian rap by proving a hit did not have to be in Twi or English. Rapping primarily in Ewe, he became the foremost artist in that language and one of the most respected lyricists of his generation, widening what Ghanaian hip-hop could sound like.

Early life

He was born Denning Edem Hotor on 20 May 1986 in Dzodze, in the Volta Region. The only son of his parents, he suffered early loss, losing his mother at thirteen and his father at sixteen, hardship that shaped both his character and his music.

Career

His breakthrough came in 2009 with the single Wottodo Woshi, which became a hit across the country and announced a distinctive new voice. Rapping in Ewe, he carved out a lane no one else occupied, and followed up with acclaimed songs like Ghana Boys and Koene.

Awards and recognition

His album Books and Rhymes swept multiple honours at the 2015 Ghana Music Awards, including Album of the Year, and that same year he was named Best International Act at the Black Canadian Awards. He is closely associated with his Volta Regime Music Group, through which he has mentored younger artists from his region.

Standing

By making Ewe-language rap commercially successful, Edem expanded the boundaries of Ghanaian hip-hop and gave the Volta Region a prominent voice in the national music scene, securing his place as one of the country's most distinctive rappers.
