Enoch Teye Mensah

Enoch Teye Mensah, known as E. T. Mensah, was a long-serving National Democratic Congress (NDC) politician who represented Ningo-Prampram in the Greater Accra Region for twenty years, from 1997 to 2017, and held ministerial posts under Presidents Rawlings and Mills. He was born on 17 May 1946 and came from Prampram.

Accra and the Rawlings years

An accountant trained at SNAPS College and a fellow of the Institute of Financial Accountants, he worked as an accounting officer at the University of Ghana before becoming Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly under the PNDC. He was Minister for Youth and Sports through both Rawlings terms, from 1993 to 2001.

Parliament

He won Ningo-Prampram in 1996 and held it for five terms. He was Minority Chief Whip before 2009 and Majority Chief Whip after the NDC's win. President Mills made him Minister for Employment and Social Welfare in 2010 and Minister for Education in 2011. He lost the 2015 primary to Sam George, who still holds the seat. In 2021 he was elected Greater Accra's representative on the Council of State. He received the Order of the Volta and died in South Africa on 1 October 2023, aged 77.
