Eric Edem Agbana

Eric Edem Agbana is a Ghanaian youth leader and politician who serves as the Member of Parliament for the Ketu North constituency in the Volta Region. Elected on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress in December 2024 with one of the highest individual vote-share percentages of that election cycle, he assumed office on 7 January 2025 as a first-term parliamentarian representing a constituency in the Ketu District where NDC support has historically been among the most dominant in the country.

Background and party leadership

Agbana's political formation began at the University of Ghana, where in 2013 he was elected President of the Student Representative Council, one of the country's most visible student union leadership positions. His SRC presidency at the University of Ghana placed him at the forefront of student advocacy and campus governance during his undergraduate years and connected him to the networks of politically active students that the NDC's youth and tertiary organs have historically cultivated. After university, he served as a Deputy National Youth Organiser for the National Democratic Congress, a national-level party leadership position that gave him oversight of the party's youth development and mobilisation activities across the country. This dual experience of student union leadership and national party youth organisation made him one of the more credentialled young NDC politicians to contest a parliamentary seat in the 2024 cycle.

2024 election and parliamentary career

He won the NDC's parliamentary primaries for Ketu North by a single vote in May 2023, the narrowest possible victory that nonetheless secured him the party's nomination for one of the Volta Region's most reliable NDC seats. In the December 2024 general election, the scale of his victory was extraordinary: he received 41,002 votes representing 87.01 per cent of all valid votes cast, with his NPP opponent Enoch Kwabla Amegbletor receiving just 5,902 votes, one of the largest one-sided margins in any constituency in the country. He serves on the Education Committee and the Public Accounts Committee in Parliament, assignments that connect his work to both the civic formation of Ghana's youth and the accountability oversight of public financial management.

Political Legacy

Eric Edem Agbana's path from SRC president to party youth organiser to MP with 87 per cent of the vote reflects the political journey of a young man who built his credentials through institutional leadership rather than patronage, winning in Ketu North with a majority that speaks to the totality of NDC dominance in the Volta Region heartland.
