Ewurabena Aubynn
Member of Parliament
About Ewurabena Aubynn
Ewurabena Aubynn is a Ghanaian politician who serves as the Member of Parliament for the Ablekuma North constituency in the Greater Accra Region. A member of the National Democratic Congress, she assumed office on 22 July 2025 following a contested parliamentary election rerun that ended seven months of legal uncertainty and delivered a historic first NDC victory in a constituency that had been held by the New Patriotic Party without interruption since Ghana's Fourth Republic began in 1993.
2024 election and legal dispute
The path to Aubynn's parliamentary mandate was among the most turbulent of any MP in the Ninth Parliament. The December 2024 parliamentary election in Ablekuma North descended into chaos at the collation centre, with rioting resulting in the counting of results from nineteen voting stations being stopped before completion. The incomplete collation left the constituency's parliamentary representation unresolved for months, with both the NDC and NPP unable to determine the outcome based on the partial results. The dispute proceeded through the courts and the Electoral Commission, resulting in an order for a parliamentary election rerun to be held on 11 July 2025, more than seven months after the original election.
The rerun and historic victory
In the rerun held on 11 July 2025, Aubynn polled 34,090 votes against the NPP's Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie who received 33,881 votes, a margin of just 209 votes from 68,382 ballots cast, with 411 rejected. The result was declared by the Electoral Commission and confirmed her as the new Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North. She was sworn in at Parliament on 22 July 2025. Her victory raised the total number of NDC seats in Parliament to 185 and broke the NPP's thirty-two year unbroken hold on the constituency, a period covering the entirety of Ghana's Fourth Republic to that point. The Ablekuma North result was widely described as one of the most historically significant individual constituency outcomes in recent Ghanaian parliamentary history.
Political Legacy
Ewurabena Aubynn's election as Ablekuma North's first NDC MP ended one of the longest unbroken party constituency holds in Ghana's Fourth Republic. Her mandate, won by 209 votes after seven months of legal uncertainty and a rerun election, is among the most hard-won in the Ninth Parliament and carries the weight of historic political change for the constituency.
