Frema Osei-Opare

Akosua Frema Osei-Opare is an economist and development specialist who represented Ayawaso West Wuogon in Accra for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from 2005 to 2013 and later became Ghana's first female Chief of Staff, serving President Akufo-Addo from January 2017 to January 2025. She was born on 5 June 1947 and comes from Wiamoase in the Ashanti Region.

Career

She attended St Monica's Secondary School in Mampong, studied home science at the University of Ghana and took a master's in food science at the University of Guelph in Canada. She lectured at Legon from 1976 to 1982 and headed the Department of Home Science, then worked for the United Nations on the Women in Fisheries project in Uganda, Ethiopia, Congo and Namibia.

Politics

She won Ayawaso West Wuogon in 2004 with 52.1 percent of the vote and held it in 2008. Under President Kufuor she was Deputy Minister for Manpower, Youth and Employment. After eight years as Chief of Staff she left office with the change of government in 2025. Valley View University gave her an honorary doctorate in 2023. She is married with four children.
