Gideon Boako

Dr Gideon Boako is a Ghanaian financial economist, academic and politician born on 16 December 1983, who serves as the Member of Parliament for the Tano North constituency in the Ahafo Region. A member of the New Patriotic Party who entered Parliament in January 2025 after defeating an incumbent in the NPP's primaries, he is best known from his previous role as the Technical Advisor and official spokesperson to Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, a platform that gave him a national public profile before his transition to constituency parliamentary politics.

Education

Dr Boako holds one of the most extensive academic portfolios in the Ninth Parliament. He earned an MPhil and an MBA in Finance from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, two postgraduate degrees that established his specialist foundation in financial economics and management. He then pursued a doctorate, completing a PhD in Finance specialising in financial economics at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, one of Africa's leading research universities. His academic formation was further enriched by short programme certificates in Financial Engineering and Risk Management from Columbia University in New York, and Financial Markets from Yale University, giving him exposure to elite Ivy League and global financial education programmes. This combination of KNUST postgraduate training, a South African research doctorate and US certificate programmes makes his academic profile unusual in Ghanaian parliamentary life.

Political career

He served as a Technical Advisor on Ghana's Economic Management Team at the Office of the President during the Akufo-Addo administration, and was simultaneously the official spokesperson to Vice President Bawumia, a role that brought him into the public eye through regular media appearances on economic and policy matters during the Bawumia presidential campaign. He contested the NPP's parliamentary primaries for Tano North in January 2024 and won convincingly with 444 votes against the incumbent MP Freda Akosua Prempeh who received 221 votes. In the December 2024 general election, he won the seat with 21,127 votes against the NDC's Pius Sampson Opoku who received 17,707 votes. He assumed office on 7 January 2025.
