Kwabena Boateng

Kwabena Boateng is a Ghanaian lawyer and politician born on 26 September 1987 in Ejisu-Onwe in the Ashanti Region, who serves as the Member of Parliament for the Ejisu constituency. A member of the New Patriotic Party who entered Parliament through a by-election in May 2024 following the death of the sitting MP, he became one of the younger members of the Eighth Parliament and was subsequently re-elected in December 2024 to continue representing Ejisu in the Ninth Parliament.

Education and legal career

Boateng studied law at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where he obtained both a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Laws, giving him a two-stage academic formation in legal studies from one of Ghana's leading technical universities. His legal specialisations are in Corporate Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution, practice areas that combine commercial transaction work with the management of civil disputes outside the formal court system. He built his legal career as a private practitioner and was also a loyal member of the Legal Directorate of the NPP in the Ashanti Region, giving him party legal service that supplemented his private practice work. He served as the Second Deputy Constituency Chairman of the NPP in the Ejisu Constituency, a party leadership position that placed him within the constituency's internal governance structure ahead of his parliamentary career.

By-election entry and re-election

The Ejisu seat fell vacant when the sitting Member of Parliament Dr John Ampontuah Kumah passed away on 7 March 2024. The NPP held its parliamentary primary for Ejisu on 13 April 2024, which Boateng won with 394 votes out of 1,033. In the by-election held on 30 April 2024, he was declared the Member of Parliament-elect for Ejisu with 27,782 votes representing 55.8 per cent of valid votes. He was sworn in by the Speaker of Parliament on 17 May 2024. He retained the seat in the December 2024 general election, continuing his representation of the Ejisu Municipal District constituency.

Political Legacy

Kwabena Boateng's entry to Parliament through a by-election necessitated by the passing of a predecessor, followed by successful re-election in the general election, establishes his Ejisu mandate on a foundation of two successive electoral contests, giving his parliamentary career the dual-tested legitimacy that by-election MPs must earn to be fully established in their constituencies.
