Mohammed Issah Bataglia

Mohammed Issah Bataglia is a Ghanaian development administrator, community organiser and politician born on 20 November 1978 in Bugubelle in the Sissala East District of the Upper West Region, who serves as the Member of Parliament for the Sissala East constituency. A member of the National Democratic Congress whose December 2024 election delivered a decisive majority that unseated the sitting NPP MP, he assumed office on 7 January 2025 representing a constituency in the Sissala East District, a predominantly savanna area in the far northwest of Ghana bordering Burkina Faso.

Professional background

Bataglia has built a career that spans education, public administration, community development and financial services. He worked as a classroom teacher with the Ghana Education Service, giving him direct experience in basic education in his home region. He subsequently served as an Administrative Liaison Officer at the Office of the President, a placement at the heart of executive government that connected him to the policy and administrative processes of the presidency. He served as Country Director of the Virtue Foundation, a community development organisation, and as Managing Director of SAS Capital Micro-Credit Limited, a microfinance institution whose work in providing financial services to low-income and unbanked communities reflects his interest in grassroots economic development. He has also been involved in community development initiatives related to renewable energy and rural infrastructure, advocacy that is directly relevant to the off-grid communities of the Sissala East District.

2024 election and parliamentary career

He contested the Sissala East constituency in December 2024 and won with 21,621 votes representing 66.71 per cent of the valid vote, defeating the incumbent NPP MP Amidu Issahaku Chinnia who received 33.29 per cent. His two-thirds majority in a constituency where the NPP had previously held the seat was part of the NDC's strong 2024 performance in the Upper West Region. He assumed office on 7 January 2025.
