About Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah

Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah is a Ghanaian lawyer and the New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Manhyia South in Kumasi. He was born on 27 July 1982 at Achiase in the Ashanti Region and entered Parliament in January 2025, taking over one of the NPP's safest seats from Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

From KNUST to Lincoln's Inn

Baffour Awuah studied English and Law at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology before going to the United Kingdom for further legal training. He took a postgraduate diploma in law and a Master of Laws at BPP University and was called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn. He also holds an executive certificate in mining from the University of Oxford.

Back in Ghana he built a private practice and became Senior Partner at Sarkodie Baffour Awuah and Partners, a law firm based in Accra. That work, rather than party office, was his main occupation until 2024.

Winning the Manhyia South ticket

Manhyia South opened up in 2024 when Opoku Prempeh, the MP and former Energy Minister known as Napo, was chosen as running mate to Mahamudu Bawumia for the December election. The NPP organised a quick primary. Six people picked up forms, four completed them, and on Sunday 14 July 2024 Baffour Awuah won with 376 votes. His nearest rival, Nana Owusu Prempeh, polled 141.

In the general election on 7 December 2024 he took about 76 per cent of the valid votes, holding the seat comfortably in a year when the NPP lost heavily nationwide. He was sworn in on 7 January 2025 as part of the Minority in the Ninth Parliament.

A lawyer's style in the chamber

He made his name quickly. As a new member of the Appointments Committee in January 2025, he questioned Dominic Ayine, the Attorney General nominee, and his measured, detailed questions drew praise across party lines. Reports described it as an unusually assured first outing for a freshman MP.

He has since become a regular Minority voice on legal and governance questions. In November 2025 he said the Appointments Committee had been "destroyed with politics", arguing that the NDC majority had stopped listening to the Minority and that weak vetting risked approving unsuitable appointees. He has also criticised the new version of the anti-LGBTQ bill as watered down, accusing the Majority of changing its position.

The seat he holds

Manhyia South covers the heart of Kumasi around the Manhyia Palace, seat of the Asantehene. It has always voted NPP, so the real contest is usually the party primary. Baffour Awuah's task is less about holding the seat than about building a profile of his own in a constituency long associated with his predecessor.

EOCO investigation

In September 2026 the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) tried to arrest Baffour Awuah on 23 September over alleged unauthorised financial transactions at SIC Life Savings and Loans, which EOCO says caused financial loss and involved money laundering. It said he had ignored invitations sent in February 2026. On 30 September a High Court in Accra granted EOCO a warrant for his arrest and for a search and seizure of documents, but directed that the arrest go through the Speaker of Parliament.

Baffour Awuah disputes EOCO's account. He says the matter relates to his former law firm, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah and Partners, which SIC Life hired to recover about GH₵3.5 million before he entered Parliament, and that the firm cooperated with investigators on 4 March, 18 March and 30 April. On 1 October 2026 he reported himself to EOCO, accompanied by his lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea and Minority MPs. No charges had been announced by mid-October.
