About Catherine Ablema Afeku
Catherine Ablema Afeku is a businesswoman and New Patriotic Party (NPP) politician who was Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts from 2017 to 2019 and represented Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira in the Western Region. She was born in Axim on 27 June 1967.
An international career
Afeku attended Nsein Senior High School in Axim and took an MBA at DeVry University's Keller Graduate School of Management in Atlanta in 2000. She worked with the World Bank, as a business development consultant for Stico Petroleum in Kenya and at the Inlingua language school in Brescia, Italy.
Politics
She came into public life in the early 2000s as a government spokesperson on infrastructure under President Kufuor. She won Evalue-Gwira in 2008, served one term, and returned in 2016 by beating the NDC's Kweku Tanikyi Kesse with 58 percent of the vote.
Tourism and the presidency
President Akufo-Addo made her Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts in 2017, a portfolio that included planning for the 2019 Year of Return. In February 2019 she moved to the presidency as a Minister of State working with the Senior Minister. Kofi Arko Nokoe of the NDC holds the seat today.
