Evans Bobie Opoku

Evans Bobie Opoku is a New Patriotic Party (NPP) politician from the Ahafo Region who spent eight years as MP for Asunafo North and held a string of regional and ministerial posts under President Akufo-Addo. Born on 1 December 1974, he comes from Dadiesoaba, a town in the constituency he later represented.

A banker who studied his way up

Opoku's path into public life ran through the classroom and the rural bank. He taught briefly in the late 1990s, then joined Ahafo Community Bank, where he started as credit manager and ended up running the institution as general manager from 2010 to 2016. Alongside work he kept collecting qualifications: a diploma in adult education and a degree in social work and psychology from the University of Ghana, a master's in development management from the University of Cape Coast, and finally a law degree in 2020.

Regional minister and deputy sports minister

After winning Asunafo North in 2016, he was trusted with regional administration. He served as Regional Minister for the old Brong-Ahafo Region, then for the newly created Ahafo Region, and at one point also acted as caretaker minister for Bono East while that region found its feet. In 2021, at the start of Akufo-Addo's second term, he moved to the Ministry of Youth and Sports as deputy minister.

Losing the seat

His 2020 win over the NDC's Mohammed Haruna was a close one, and the rematch in December 2024 went the other way. Haruna took the seat as part of the NDC's sweep, bringing Opoku's parliamentary career to a close in January 2025.
