King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II

King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II is the Ga Mantse, the paramount ruler of the Ga State, whose traditional area covers much of Accra. Born Kelvin Nii Tackie Abia, he was enstooled on 9 May 2020 and sworn in as President of the Ga Traditional Council in October 2021. His claim to the stool has been contested in court by Nii Tackie Adama Latse II, and in July 2025 the Supreme Court ruled in his favour.

A Ga king raised in Kumasi

He was born in Accra on 2 August 1971 to Prince Ebenezer Nii Armah Tackie. The family moved from the United Kingdom to Kumasi, where his father was a senior lecturer at KNUST, and he spent close to thirty years in the Ashanti capital. He has said that his whole life was in Kumasi and that he knew little about Accra before he became king. He attended Ghana Secondary School in Koforidua, earned a BA and an MBA at KNUST, and holds a PhD from the University of California.

Career before the stool

He started at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, where he became an assistant director working on audience research. He founded Keeda Production Limited, lectured at KNUST and advised the liberal studies department of Kumasi Technical University. In the 2012 presidential election he was the running mate of Jacob Osei Yeboah, who stood as an independent candidate.

The contest for the stool

The Ga stool had been disputed for years before his enstoolment, and Nii Tackie Adama Latse II continued to press his own claim. In November 2021 the High Court in Kumasi ruled that Adama Latse's removal from the National Register of Chiefs had been unlawful. On 12 June 2025 the Court of Appeal upheld that ruling and ordered the National House of Chiefs to restore Adama Latse to the register as Ga Mantse within 14 days, though the Ga Mantse's office said King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II remained the chief. On 23 July 2025 a five-member Supreme Court panel presided over by Justice Gabriel Pwamang quashed the order, finding that the High Court had not given King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II notice or a hearing before ruling against him. The decision left him as the recognised Ga Mantse.

Reign

As Ga Mantse he has hosted international visitors in the Ga State, including UNESCO's Director-General, who was given a Ga stool title. In October 2025 he pledged support for the Musicians Union of Ghana as it marked its golden jubilee.
