Kofi Abrefa Busia

Kofi Abrefa Busia was a scholar-statesman who briefly led Ghana as prime minister during its Second Republic, a distinguished academic whose career bridged the worlds of sociology and politics, and a lifelong opponent of one-party rule.

Early life and scholarship

He was born on 11 July 1913 in Wenchi, in what is now the Bono Region. He was educated at Mfantsipim, Wesley College and Achimota before studying at the University of London and Oxford, where he earned a doctorate and built a reputation as a sociologist of the first rank.

Opposition to Nkrumah

An academic by profession, Busia became one of the most prominent opponents of Kwame Nkrumah, championing multi-party democracy against Nkrumah's one-party state. His stance forced him into exile for much of the Nkrumah era, teaching at universities in Europe.

Prime Minister

After the fall of Nkrumah and a period of military rule, Busia returned to lead the Progress Party to victory and became prime minister in October 1969, at the head of Ghana's Second Republic. His government worked to restore civilian democratic rule, but faced severe economic difficulties, and he was overthrown in a military coup in January 1972.

Legacy

He died in Oxford on 28 August 1978. Kofi Busia is remembered as one of Ghana's foremost intellectuals and a foundational figure of the country's liberal-democratic tradition, the political lineage that endures in the modern New Patriotic Party.
