Worlase Kpeli

Worlase Kpeli is a Ghanaian lawyer and politician born on 26 August 1980 who serves as the Member of Parliament for the Afram Plains North constituency in the Eastern Region. Elected as an independent candidate in December 2024 after being suspended from the National Democratic Congress for campaigning against the party, he is one of the few independent MPs in the Ninth Parliament, representing a constituency in the Kwahu North District of the Eastern Region, an area of the Afram Plains whose communities straddle the upper Afram River basin and the subsistence agriculture and fishing economy of the Eastern Region's Volta Lake periphery.

Legal career

Kpeli trained and practises as a lawyer, a professional background that underpins both his public advocacy in the constituency and his political navigation of the complex circumstances surrounding his independent parliamentary run. Political career

Kpeli was associated with the NDC and had prior political engagement in the Afram Plains North constituency before the 2024 election cycle. He was suspended from the NDC in July 2024 for campaigning against the party's interests in the constituency, a disciplinary action that arose from his decision to challenge the NDC's chosen parliamentary candidate rather than support the party's official position. Despite the suspension, he contested the December 2024 general election as an independent candidate, defeating the incumbent NDC MP Betty Mensah Krosby. After his victory, he maintained publicly that he had not forfeited his NDC membership, a position that reflected the ambiguity of his status as a suspended rather than expelled party member. He assumed office on 7 January 2025.

Political Legacy

Worlase Kpeli's independent victory in Afram Plains North, achieved despite NDC suspension, is one of the Ninth Parliament's most politically unusual constituency results, giving his first term the challenge of governing a constituency where his political affiliation remains contested and where his legal background will need to support the parliamentary navigation of a status that is difficult to sustain indefinitely between independent and party membership.
