Yakubu Mohammed

Yakubu Mohammed is a Ghanaian earth scientist, marketing professional and politician born on 7 November 1989 in Abesewa in the Ashanti Region, who serves as the Member of Parliament for the Ahafo Ano South East constituency. A member of the National Democratic Congress who won the seat in December 2024 as a first-term parliamentarian, he assumed office on 7 January 2025, and also serves as a Board Member of the Minerals Income Investment Fund, the state institution that manages Ghana's equity interests in mining companies.

Education

Mohammed attended Tamale Senior High School in the Northern Region for his secondary education. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Earth Science from the University for Development Studies in Tamale in July 2013, a scientific degree in the physical and applied sciences of the earth including geology, hydrology, remote sensing and the geophysical dimensions of natural resource exploration. He subsequently completed a Master of Business Administration at Cardiff Metropolitan University in Wales in February 2016, adding a UK business school management qualification to his science undergraduate degree, a combination that positioned him for careers bridging the technical analysis of earth resources and the commercial strategy of business management.

Career and community work

His professional career has applied his earth science and business training to roles in marketing, corporate communications and public relations, giving him experience in the communication of technical information to public and business audiences. He has been engaged in community development initiatives in his home area of Abesewa, founding the Abesewa Tertiary Students Association, which provides mentorship and free learning opportunities to underprivileged tertiary students from the community. His appointment as a Board Member of the Minerals Income Investment Fund reflects his technical background in earth science and his interest in the governance of Ghana's extractive industry revenues.

2024 election

He won the Ahafo Ano South East constituency in December 2024 with 15,609 votes representing 52.45 per cent of valid ballots, defeating the NPP's Frederick Acheampong. He assumed office on 7 January 2025. Ahafo Ano South East is a constituency in the Ashanti Region bordering the Ahafo Region, an area whose gold mining economy and agricultural communities present both resource governance opportunities and environmental management challenges.

Political Legacy

Yakubu Mohammed's UDS earth science degree, his Cardiff Metropolitan MBA, his MIIF board membership and his ATSA community education initiative give his first parliamentary term a natural resource governance perspective and a community development record that reflects his dual formation as a scientist and a businessman from one of Ghana's mining regions.
