About John Boadu

John Boadu is a Ghanaian politician and the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Delegates elected him at the party's National Delegates Conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on 3 October 2026, where he polled 2,888 votes to beat former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, former National Chairman Paul Afoko and Sammy Crabbe. He was 56 at the time and has spent more than 30 years working in the party's structures.

Early life

Boadu was born in Kumasi to Kwasi Agyarko, a merchant and United Party activist from Jamase in the Ashanti Region, and Jane Ladze Padi, a teacher from Krobo-Odumase in the Eastern Region. He attended K.O. Methodist Primary School at Ashanti New Town and the UST Primary School.

Party career

He began at the bottom of the party ladder as a polling station chairman and constituency secretary, and later served as Research and Information Director for the Greater Accra Region. At the national level he was National Finance Officer, National Youth Treasurer, National Youth Organiser and Deputy National Communications Director. He became National Organiser in 2014, acted as General Secretary from 2015 and was elected to the post in 2018, running the party's machinery through the 2016 election that returned it to power and the 2020 election.

In 2022 he lost the General Secretary race to Justin Frimpong Kodua. In December 2023 President Akufo-Addo appointed him Director-General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), the body that oversees state-owned enterprises, where he introduced performance contracts and an online entity portal for those companies.

National Chairman

After the NPP's defeat in the 2024 elections, Boadu ran for chairman on a promise to rebuild the party from the grassroots and win back young voters ahead of 2028. After his victory he called on members to "choose unity over division". He leads a national executive that includes First Vice Chairman Kojo Bamba, General Secretary Justin Kodua, National Organiser Titus Glover and Communications Director Dennis Miracles Aboagye. The National Youth Organiser, Abanga Fuseini Yakubu, is one of his protégés.
