About Kenneth Gilbert Adjei

Kenneth Gilbert Adjei is a Ghanaian politician, businessman and public administrator from Trede in the Ashanti Region, who has served the National Democratic Congress in both ministerial and party roles across two administrations of President John Dramani Mahama. A holder of three postgraduate qualifications and a seasoned operator across the private and public sectors, he has built a profile as a manager with experience in defence policy, infrastructure and water governance.

Education and early career

Adjei attended the prestigious Opoku Ware School in Kumasi, where he served as Dining Hall Prefect, before pursuing tertiary education across three institutions. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, an Executive MBA from the University of Ghana, and a Master of Arts in Peace, Security and Intelligence Management from the University of Professional Studies, Accra. His early professional life was spent in the private sector, where he worked in marketing, financial services and insurance. He also served as programme director of the Lordina Foundation, the philanthropic arm of former First Lady Lordina Mahama, and held board-level responsibilities including a seat on the National Lottery Authority board.

First Mahama administration

When President Mahama appointed him Deputy Minister for Defence in 2015, Adjei entered government service in a portfolio that gave him early exposure to national security institutions, military procurement and defence administration. He held the role until the NDC's electoral defeat in January 2017, after which he returned to private sector activities while maintaining his engagement with the party.

Return to government

Following the NDC's return to power after the December 2024 elections, President Mahama appointed Adjei as Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources in February 2025. The portfolio placed him in charge of Ghana's housing deficit challenge, infrastructure maintenance and rural and urban water access, among the most development-critical briefs in any Ghanaian government. He served in that role until August 2026, when President Mahama appointed him Minister for Defence, elevating him to the full ministerial rank in the security sector where his earlier career had begun.

Political Legacy

Kenneth Gilbert Adjei's public career reflects the profile of an NDC figure who has moved between private sector leadership and government service with the versatility that ministerial portfolios across infrastructure and defence demand. His appointment to lead the Defence Ministry in 2026 represented the fullest expression of a public service journey that began as a deputy more than a decade earlier.
