About Akoto Ampaw
Anthony Akoto Ampaw was a lawyer and human rights activist who led the legal team defending President Akufo-Addo's victory in the 2020 election petition. He was born in 1950 and died on 20 October 2023.
He studied law at the University of Ghana and practised in commercial, labour, media, constitutional and human rights law. For decades he was active in civil society campaigns for democratic rights, and the Ghana Journalists Association honoured him for his work promoting democracy and good governance.
In 2021 he was lead counsel for President Akufo-Addo when the Supreme Court heard and dismissed John Mahama's petition against the 2020 result. He died at the University of Ghana Medical Centre. A memorial lecture in his honour was held at the University of Ghana in October 2024. He was married to Akua Ampaw, a lawyer and lecturer at the Ghana School of Law, and they had four children.
