Akua Kuenyehia

Akua Kuenyehia is a legal scholar who sat as a judge of the International Criminal Court from 2003 to 2015 and served as its First Vice-President. She was born in 1947.

She went to Achimota School, the University of Ghana and Somerville College, Oxford, of which she is an honorary fellow. Most of her career has been at the University of Ghana, where she was Dean of Law; the law faculty building there is named in her honour. She has taught as a visiting professor at Leiden and Temple universities and is president of Mountcrest University College.

She represented Ghana on the UN committee on discrimination against women (CEDAW) and has written widely on women and the law in Africa, including Women and Law in West Africa (2003). At the ICC she was one of three African women judges and sat in the Appeals Division from 2009. She is married with three children.
