Anthony Benin

Anthony Benin is a retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana and a pioneer judge of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice. He was born in Kumasi on 4 January 1950.

He went to Sekondi College, graduated from the University of Ghana in 1973 and was called to the bar in 1975 after the Ghana School of Law. He became an assistant state attorney in 1976 and joined the bench three years later as a grade two district magistrate, rising to the Court of Appeal in 1994.

In 2001, while an Appeal Court judge, he was named one of the first judges of the ECOWAS Community Court, the regional court for West Africa, and he was its vice-president from 2007 to 2009. He left that court in 2011. President Mahama swore him in as a Supreme Court justice in November 2012, and he retired in January 2020.
