Augustus Molade Akiwumi

Augustus Molade Akiwumi was a barrister and judge who became the second Speaker of Ghana's Parliament, from 1958 to 1960, and one of the first justices of the Supreme Court of Ghana. He was born in Lagos on 7 April 1891 and died in 1985.

His Yoruba family moved to the Gold Coast when he was a child, and he became a naturalised Ghanaian. At nineteen he was sent to England, where he went to Queen's College, Taunton, and read law at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge; he also trained as a banker at the Midland Bank. He was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1921.

He was elected Speaker in February 1958, in the first years after independence. When the republic was declared in July 1960 he joined the new Supreme Court, and he retired from the bench in April 1961. He later served as legal secretary of the East African Common Services Organisation. He married Grace Aryee and later Helen Kabuki Ocansey.
